A makeover has been approved to turn a dilapidated single-storey building in Coventry into a new state-of-the-art Smart Laboratory (SL), which will offer access to the latest technology. It will be open to schools, universities, businesses and the public with the opportunity to turn ideas into reality. This will be done by training the trainers to use important new computer-controlled tools to enable trainees to gain confidence and digital fabrication skills. A project Feasibility Assessment and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment has already been completed. Also, a Business Case has been prepared and a budget of £750K has been approved. The target is to publicize the SL and open the refurbished building to visitors within 10 months.

You have been appointed as a Project Management trainee by Fab Coventry (FB) and you have been assigned to assist the team which will manage this project. Your first task is to prepare a Project Initiation Document (PID) using appropriate project management theory and frameworks, to present to the company’s board of directors.

The PID should consider the following aspects of the project:

• The project scope statement, including a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
• The project schedule including a Gantt chart and project milestones.
• An initial assessment of stakeholders (minimum 8) by identifying, analyzing, planning and providing recommendations on how these stakeholders should be managed to maximize the chance of achieving the project objectives.
• An initial assessment of risks (minimum 8) presented by the project and the response strategies proposed.
